FAQ

What is Proxy Server?
A proxy server is a machine that sits between the proxy users and the servers that they need access to. When a proxy user requests a certain remote resource using a URL, the proxy server receives this request and fetches the resource to fulfill the client’s request.

What is an anonymous proxy server?
Anonymous proxy does not transfer the information about the IP-address of its user, and thus effectively hide the information about you and your surfing interests. In addition, some proxies (the so-called elite proxies) can also hide the fact that a user surfing through a proxy server. So there are two types of anonymous proxies.

What is public proxy server?
It is a proxy server which is free and open for everybody on the Internet. There is quite large number of public proxy servers in many countries, but most of them are not anonymous.

What is a purpose of a proxy server?

  • To keep machines behind it anonymous (mainly for security)
  • To apply access policy to network services or content, e.g. to block undesired sites
  • To log / audit usage, i.e. to provide company employee Internet usage reporting
  • To bypass security/ parental controls
  • To scan transmitted content before delivery for malware
  • To scan outbound content, e.g. for data leak protection
  • To circumvent regional restrictions

What is the difference between transparent, anonymous and elite (high anonymous) proxy?

Transparent proxy – is a proxy that forwards your IP using HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR variable. In such way visited server knows that you are using a proxy. This kind of proxies is often used for limiting traffic and there is nothing to do with anonymity in Internet.

Anonymous proxy – your IP address is not forwarded to visited server during the connection. The visited server only sees IP of the proxy you are using. Despite visited server knows that you are using proxy, it is enough for anonymous surfing the Internet.

Elite proxy – is also called high anonymous server. It doesn’t transfer the information about the IP-address of the client, and thus effectively hide the information about you and your surfing interests. They also hide the very fact, that you are surfing through a proxy server.

Proxy server type Your IP hidden? Visited server knows, that you are using proxy Purpose
transparent No Yes Reducing of abroad traffic or increase of the Internet speed
anonymous Yes Yes Anonymous surfing in Internet
elite Yes No Totally anonymous surfing in Internet

Is there a risk of using public proxies?
In using a public proxy server (for example, anonymizing HTTP proxy), all data sent to the service being used (for example, HTTP server in a website) must pass through the proxy server before being sent to the service, mostly in unencrypted form. It is therefore a feasible risk that a malicious proxy server may record everything sent: including unencrypted logins and passwords. In what is more of an inconvenience than a risk, proxy users may find themselves being blocked from certain Web sites, as numerous forums and Web sites block IP addresses from proxies known to have spammed or trolled the site. What is SOCKS5 Proxy?
SOCKS proxy transfers data from a client to a server using SOCKS4 or SOCKS5 protocol, not filtering or changing data contents and can work with HTTP, FTP, SMTP, POP3, NNTP, etc. This kind of proxy server grants you always absolute anonymity, because from the point of view of the web server SOCKS proxy is a client.

How can you use SOCKS proxy?
SOCKS5 proxy is actually supported by many programs. Web browsers have added support of SOCKS proxies too, though without authentication support. For this case and for the programs which are not supporting SOCKS proxy at all, there were developed special software which automatically enables TCP and UDP networking for client applications. Such software captures all traffic of the program and route it onto a SOCKS proxy. We suggest to use a free application called FreeCap (http://FreeCap.ru/eng)   → How can I configure FreeCap?

Where should I enter login and password for SOCKS5 proxy in the web-browser?
We do not know any web-browser, that supports SOCKS5 proxy authentication. You should use special programs like SocksCap or FreeCap (or any other program) for adding support of SOCKS5 proxy to your browser.
